Introduction

During my clinical internship in the department of orthopedics, I had the opportunity to observe and participate in the care of patients undergoing joint surgery. I was assigned to work with a team of experienced nurses who provided excellent care to the patients. This experience was valuable as it allowed me to learn the different techniques and methods used in caring for patients undergoing joint surgery.

Pre-operative preparation

One of the most important aspects of joint surgery care is pre-operative preparation. Prior to the surgery, the patient’s health is assessed and any issues are addressed. The patient is informed about the procedure, its risks, and the expected outcomes. The nurse is responsible for ensuring that the patient follows the fasting instructions. The surgical site is prepared, the skin is cleaned and hair is removed to prevent infection. The patient’s emotional and mental status must also be assessed to ensure readiness for surgery.

Intraoperative care

The intraoperative phase of the joint surgery care involves teamwork and precise coordination. The surgical team must work together to ensure the safety of the patient and reduce the risk of complications. The nurse is responsible for monitoring the patient’s vital signs, administering medications, providing emotional support, and communicating with the surgical team. Throughout the procedure, the nurse must stay alert and vigilant to quickly identify any issues that may arise and intervene immediately.

Post-operative care

The post-operative care of patients undergoing joint surgery is critical to promoting healing and reducing the length of stay in the hospital. Post-operative care includes monitoring the patient’s vital signs, pain management, administering medications, preventing infections, promoting mobility and preventing deep vein thrombosis and other complications. The nurse must assess the patient’s response to pain medication and intervene as necessary to provide effective pain management. The nurse should also encourage the patient to move and perform range of motion exercises as soon as possible after surgery.

Discharge planning

Discharge planning is an important part of joint surgery care. The nurse plays a major role in ensuring that the patient is discharged safely and prepared for recovery at home. The nurse must educate the patient and family members about the medications, follow-up appointments, and home care instructions. The patient’s mobility and safety at home must be assessed, and appropriate arrangements made for any needed devices such as walkers, canes, and support rails. The nurse must also ensure that the patient has access to any necessary resources such as home health care services or physical therapy.

Conclusion

Through my clinical internship, I gained valuable experience in the care of patients undergoing joint surgery. Pre-operative preparation, intraoperative care, post-operative care, and discharge planning are all critical stages that require teamwork, coordination, and attention to detail. The nurse plays a vital role in each of these stages and must be knowledgeable, skilled, and compassionate. I am grateful for the opportunity to have observed and participated in this aspect of nursing care and look forward to applying what I have learned in my future practice.
